Vinyl is known for being a low maintenance siding material. However, it is not something you can just ignore. Over time, it attracts dirt and grime due to its exposure to the elements. With spring just around the corner, it’s time you pay close attention to it. Lexington Blue, one of the top local siding and roofing contractors, shares tips to effectively spring-clean your vinyl siding.
Gather Your Cleaners and Materials
Before you start cleaning your vinyl siding, you must first be certain of which cleaner to use. There are many types of affordable cleaning products that you can grab off the shelf. Even so, you can just stick to what’s in your home that is easy to prepare. A quarter cup of dish soap mixed with four gallons of water should be enough to remove the stubborn dirt and stains off the siding surface. As for the cleaning material, use a long-handled, soft-bristled brush.
Use a Garden Hose
While you can rent a power washer at your local home improvement store, certain precautions come with operating the equipment. If you have a garden hose, you can use it instead. Wash the siding down an area at the time, hosing in a downward direction. Make sure not to push water into the siding overlaps and the roof’s eaves.
Start Scrubbing Away
Now that the siding panels are wet, you can begin removing dirt and grime stuck in them. Using the dish soap solution, scrub the areas with visible dirt using your soft-bristled brush. Start from the bottom part and work your way to the top. Once done, immediately rinse with water from the hose.
Inspect Your Siding
After cleaning your vinyl siding, take the time to examine it for any signs of mold and mildew. If you find one, especially in surfaces that are usually shaded and/or moist, you can remove them using a vinegar and water solution or a commercial cleaner. If you are using the latter, make sure it’s formulated for use in mold and mildew removal.
